The Inner Sound is a strait located between the isle of Stroma and the north coast of Scotland, in the Pentland Firth.

This work provides developers a technique to follow from site selection to preliminary tidal farm design, which includes the effects of tidal energy extraction on the flow field. In addition, this technique can be used to help developers in the process of tidal farm design and general turbine specifications.

Three different tidal array sizes in the Inner Sound were assessed, revealing that an oversized capacity of the tidal farm will yield an underperforming tidal farm, and consequently unavoidable higher costs of energy generation.
